Texas Lottery - When to Play
Use this guide to determine when to play a specific game in the Texas lottery. This page focuses on the odds of playing any particular game and what I call the "Expected Value" to determine when is the best time to play.
The mega millions draws people in by offering enormous jackpots. Before you play this game you should ask yourself "Do I really need 180 Million Dollars? Or will 10 Million due?"
In California the only guaranteed win (divided by the number of winners) is the Jackpot. This makes it impossible for me to determine the Dollar Value per Odd for this game. The odds of winning the Jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536. Generally this means that the Jackpot should be about 160 Million to justify playing the game.
You may have noticed that the Texas Lotto Jackpots are rather large. This is because you have to choose from 54 numbers which greatly reduces your odds of winning. This allows the state to increase its jackpot to try and entice more people into playing the game. The Jackpot should be $23,371,843 before you play.
I generally do not support any game with a powerball. The powerball throws the odds greatly and the jackpot usually never reaches a point where it will be worth your time and money to play. This game is a little different. Because there are only four selections + the powerball, your odds are still relatively low (1 in 1.8 MIllion). Therefor the jackpot will need to be $1,351,572 before you play.
Although this game seems like a winner because of decent odds, it really doesn't offer a big enough jackpot to warrant play. You should only play this game if the jackpot gets to $221,336, which is never.
